Whitby is an historic fishing town on the north east coast of the United Kingdom. Amongst other things, it was the home of Captain Cook for many years, is the site of Whitby Abbey, and was the influence for the novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker.
An Internet poll that ran for three months at the end of 2003, voted for Whitby as being the best place to in Britain to spend a weekend break. It is full of good cafes and restaurants, serving varied dishes including the local speciality "fish and chips". The beach stretches for miles, up the coast to Sandsend. The town has many small original shops selling local gifts, including Whitby Jet - a type of stone found only in this area and used in jewellry.
